Malaysia's Rise as a Pioneer in Sustainable Construction Materials

Explore the green revolution in construction with wood plastic composite (WPC), a sustainable and versatile material highlighted for its eco-friendly attributes and user-friendly applications in the building industry.

Dr Loh Yueh Feng, Deputy Director (R&D) of the Fibre and Biocomposite Centre (FIDEC) in Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB), delivered a compelling overview of Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) during the recent International Construction Transformation Conference (ICTC) 2023 in Kuala Lumpur.

WPC emerges as a revolutionary solution in construction, offering a comprehensive set of advantages. Dr Loh highlights key reasons to opt for WPC, emphasising its sustainability, extended lifespan, cost-saving potential, weather resistance, high durability, and resistance to termites and insects.

She said: “Sustainability is a driving force behind WPC adoption, composed of 70% biomass material and 30% thermoplastic, minimising environmental impact. Its extended lifespan surpasses conventional alternatives, providing a durable solution for various applications.”

The cost-saving potential enhances WPC’s appeal, proving to be a budget-friendly choice without compromising quality or durability. Weather resistance makes WPC ideal for structures exposed to the elements.

High durability, combined with resistance to termites and insects, positions WPC as a low-maintenance and resilient option. Dr Loh notes that these qualities contribute to its suitability for a wide range of construction applications.

Going beyond inherent advantages, WPC introduces a paradigm shift with prefabrication using the Knock-down and Industrialised Building System (IBS). Installation becomes streamlined, guided by 2D/3D drawings, offering easy replacement in case of damage.
