Sarawak Charts a Greener Path with Sustainable Construction Drive

KUCHING – Sarawak is reaffirming its commitment to a low-carbon future through a bold push in sustainable construction and renewable energy. Speaking at the Construction Sustainability Summit during ICW Borneo 2025, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hassan outlined the state’s vision for environmentally responsible development.

“We are not just building structures, we are building futures,” he said, highlighting the integration of green values into construction practices across Sarawak.

A key element of this transition is the newly introduced Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions) Ordinance 2023, aimed at regulating emissions across vital economic sectors. The Deputy Premier stressed that architecture, infrastructure, and energy systems must function as part of a larger, resilient ecosystem.

He cited upcoming initiatives such as a viaduct project at Bukit Mas, which is designed to preserve surrounding natural vegetation and habitats, as a model for future developments. The project incorporates geotechnical and environmental considerations and a broader shift toward nature-positive planning.

Other innovative elements include solar-integrated facades, smart logistics, and reduced construction waste – all supporting the state’s goal to cut carbon emissions by 60 – 70%.

“We must rethink how we build – not just for today’s needs, but for tomorrow’s climate,” he added. “Our choices today shape the emissions of tomorrow.”

The presentation echoed Sarawak’s long-term sustainability aspirations, with a strong message: responsible development is not just a regulatory goal, but a moral obligation to future generations.
