Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad’s presentation at the Construction Sustainability Summit during ICW Borneo 2025 made it clear that shifting from traditional Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) to blended cement is no longer just an option, but an industry-wide imperative.
Blended cement combines clinker with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as fly ash, GGBFS, pozzolans, silica fume and fine limestone. These materials help reduce the carbon intensity of cement production without compromising performance or durability.
CMS’s historical overview showed how acceptance of blended cement in Malaysia has grown steadily. Initial adoption was slow in the 1980s and 1990s, as contractors were unfamiliar with its benefits. However, by the early 2010s, thanks to increased environmental awareness and the rise of green building certification systems like the Green Building Index (GBI), blended cement captured nearly 30% of the market.
Between 2015 and 2020, the push for sustainable urban development in Malaysia’s major cities gave rise to an even greater market share of about 40% to 45%. Today, with environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals becoming more central to both public and private sector projects, the blended cement segment is poised to dominate over 50% of the national market in the near future.

CMS’s Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) portfolio reflects this momentum. With varying strength classes tailored for everything from plasterwork to heavy-duty construction, their Eco, Eco-Plus, Deluxe and Klasik ranges offer sustainable solutions for diverse project needs.
The company’s strategy is aligned with sustainability trends and national and global carbon reduction policies. As Malaysia works toward a 45% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030, CMS’s greener cement offerings are becoming integral to building responsibly for the future.
