Greener Infrastructure Through Innovation and Inclusivity

Resilience is not just about complex infrastructure: it is about adaptable systems and empowered people. In the third part of this series, the heart of Gamuda Engineering’s strategy lies in an unwavering focus on innovation, digitalisation, and inclusivity.

The company’s adoption of next-generation Digital IBS (Industrialised Building System) has redefined construction efficiency, said Si Kok Siong, Executive Director of Gamuda Engineering, during his presentation at ICW Borneo 2025.

Driven by BIM-based manufacturing, robotic formwork, and rebar processing, this has resulted in a 40% reduction in embodied carbon and a 55% decrease in foreign labour dependence. Next, controlled casting and curing further enhance quality and reduce waste, demonstrating that industrialised methods can also be environmentally friendly. Gamuda’s in-house BIM Augmented Reality (BIMAR) app superimposes 3D models onto real-world environments, enabling more accurate site visualisation and collaboration. Combined with drone surveying and AI-powered autonomous tunnelling, such as in the Sydney Metro West project, Gamuda is not only digitising but also automating its construction practices.

Yet, sustainability also means societal impact. Gamuda invests in training individuals with autism, supports diverse hiring practices, and promotes equal opportunities. Their commitment is further reflected in their Five-Star INFRASTAR sustainability rating for the MRT Putrajaya Line, achieved through accredited green building practices.

In today’s rapidly evolving world, comprehensive resilience across technology, the environment, and people is essential. Gamuda Engineering’s vision goes beyond compliance. It is about designing and delivering infrastructure that anticipates future demands while uplifting present communities.

By setting these high standards, Gamuda is not only helping Malaysia reach its climate goals but also setting a new regional benchmark for what truly sustainable infrastructure should look like.
