Kuala Lumpur: Closing the highly successful ICW 2019 and Asean Super 8 exhibition was QLASSIC Day - Construction Quality Excellence Awards on Thursday.
Works Minister YB Tuan Baru Bian said he was confident the construction industry would be able to achieve a high level of quality work with the Construction Industry Standard (CIS).
Baru also encouraged construction industry players to adopt QLASSIC and attend the training provided by CIDB. He said that this would ensure that purchasers are confident of construction quality whilst developers become more committed towards implementing QLASSIC.
“This will spur the growth of the nation’s construction industry and I am certain that the collaboration between government agencies and the private sector will fulfil the aspirations of the Public Works Department in making the construction industry more advanced, and compete at an international level,” he said.
The minister added that the Works Ministry is targeting to build one million QLASSIC certified affordable housing within the next 10 years.
Baru also said for all new development projects, CIDB has increased its feasibility scoring to 83% for 2019 in order to ensure ongoing commitment to quality.
His speech was followed by the QLASSIC implementation pledge signing ceremony before the event proceeded to the QLASSIC 2019 awards presentation.
A total of 15 project owners, 17 contractors and 18 architects received the QLASSIC Achievement Award through 20 development projects. All the projects have achieved QLASSIC scoring of 83%.
The Highest QLASSIC Achievement Award went to the Saujana Duta Phase 2L, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan under the Project Owner, Seremban Two Holdings Sdn. Bhd., Main Contractor, Timbunan Bakti Construction Sdn. Bhd. and the Project Architect, Design Collective Architecture Network Sdn. Bhd.
The winner achieved 89% - the highest ever scoring on QLASSIC since its establishment.
Earlier, CIDB Malaysia Chairman Tan Sri Dr. Ir. Ahmad Tajuddin Ali said in his opening remarks that QLASSIC encourages the principle of “Do It Right the First Time” .
“QLASSIC’s scoring can be the criteria to ensure contractors achieve quality in construction projects. Scoring will not be taken into account at the point of re-work once assessment is completed,” he said.
He also explained that in its effort to assist and educate, CIDB provides training on QLASSIC so that project owners can train their team accordingly.
CIDB also promotes awareness to house owners on the benefits of QLASSIC, he added.
QLASSIC (Quality Assessment System in Construction) was developed by CIDB as a system to measure and evaluate the workmanship quality of a building construction work based on Construction Industry Standard (CIS).
The primary objective of CIS is to provide a benchmark on the standards that can be applied by the industry to measure the quality performance of their respective construction projects objectively through a scoring system.
